Lahan

Day 39 – Kathmandu to Lahan – 2 Oct 2018

It was time for us to bid good bye to our quick and short visit to Nepal and the journey to Kakadibhitta(the eastern border of Nepal) is 450kms from Kathmandu. Our next plan is to enter Bhutan via the Phuentsholing border. Since it is not a great idea to cover the complete distance of 640 kms from Kathmandu to Phuentsholing in a single day, we decided to break our journey at two places.

  • TOTAL KMS: 261 Kms
  • TIME TAKEN: 7 hours 45 mins
  • AVG FUEL EFFICIENCY: 19.6 Km/L
  • ROUTE: Kamalamai, Mithila
  • NHs: H03, H06, H01
  • TOLL PAID: Nil

Finding the two halts between these two places was a deal breaker. After spending considerable amount of time on Tripadvisor searching for stay options, we decided to break our journey at two places before entering Bhutan – Lahan in Nepal and then Chalsa in WestBengal. Lahan was selected only as a night halt. And Chalsa, we chose as it was close to the Bhutan border which would be easy to reach in the morning.

The drive from Kathmandu to Lahan was a lot different from others especially for the well built roads after the earthquake. The roads clearly showed that Nepal has learnt great lessons from the earth quake, and were quickly adapting to the needs to avoid such natural hazards in future.  The drive was along a beautiful river for most of the time until we got down the mountain roads. We could see rafters having a great time in the river.

The drive was smooth and peaceful and we reached our stay in Lahan around 6.30pm. This place is very close to the Bihar border and could see the hotel occupied by people mostly from Bihar. We were even surprised to see that our mobiles were sometimes getting coverage from Indian network service providers when we were driving parallel to the borders. We did not have much to do in the hotel, so we stepped out to roam around the village. There was some small festival going on in the nearby temple, with colourful balloons, toys, and food stalls along the road side. We spent some time there seeing things around, however didn’t feel it too safe there mostly because it was very dark and hence, returned to the hotel soon. We had our dinner at the hotel, and soon headed to sleep with the excitement of entering back to India, the next day!
